Hi Tami! Yay you're here!

I confess I haven't tried the dvorak layout, though people tell me it's excellent. I may persuade my ancient laptop to try it. Seems like that would be a good keyboard to try to alter since I don't care much about it. On the other hand, the temptation to spend MORE time at my desk isn't exactly what I need, lol!

The blog look is the work of M. K. Hobson (her own blog is in the sidebar), who really did a wonderful job of designing and executing it. I'm really really happy about it.

Oh, what marvelous luck, to have you linked by a friend!

I love this (and your blog is gorgeous, by the way).

As far as Lie #1 goes, another possible solution I've heard of is to try the Dvorak keyboard layout for typing. This one, I heard from Holly Lisle, who has more than enough words-per-lifetime under her belt to give advice on the subject of carpal tunnel.

Lie #2 is my personal pet peeve. When people tell me they don't want to write because they're uninspired, it makes me want to dig out that Clue x 4 you mention. Your advice is much more useful. ;)

Next time we get together for a brainstorm, try my little netbook. I really like the itsy bitsy keyboard because I don't have to stretch arthritic fingers and it only takes a whisper of pressure. Under 2 pounds. It fits in my purse!

I can afford it if I save for it, just probably not the same month I upgrade the laptop to a netbook. That's a fabulous suggestion, however, and one that I'll definitely keep in mind. The Jo Clayton fund is a wonderful resource and considering the expenses of medical care one that we can all get behind!

If you truly cannot afford the travel ergo keyboard, maybe the Jo Clayton fund could help. It's for PNW SF writers facing medical expenses they can't afford, and I believe it has more money than qualified clients right now.

I read and write (almost) every day. I usually write in the mornings and read while taking bath and just before turning out the light at night. When I'm really on a writing roll, though, I'll take my laptop to bed and keep writing. I've also been known to take a stool into the bathroom and put my laptop on that while taking a bath ... chancy, but hey, I'm an addict, what can I say.

Anyway, on those rare occasions when I read in the morning, anything that kicks me out of the book will keep me out of the book until evening, because I'll sit up and feel like I should be writing. Likewise, if I'm writing at night and I start faltering, I'll fold up the laptop and read a bit. This has been useful for habit-formation, and also because what I write at night tends to not make sense in the morning if I'm too tired ....

I find I can't read books tangential to my writing. I can't read King Arthur while I'm writing King Arthur, or dragons when I'm writing dragons. So I read urban fantasy when I write high fantasy, or King Arthur when I'm doing space opera. Research however is an ongoing thing, whole books for planned projects, snippets for the missing factoid, that kind of thing.

Then I have to throw in a couple of mysteries just to keep me sane.
